21 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe.
The first two chapters of the book of Romans are enough to make even the most confident people feel ashamed. We are declared to be sinners in God’s eyes, and nothing we can do will be able to reverse that, and this is why Christ came into the world. There is provided a new righteousness by faith in Him.
We could never fulfill what God demands (perfect obedience): every mistake, every lie, moment of lust, outburst of anger, is recorded in God’s sight. “Righteous” is a word that would never be able to describe us, in God’s sight we’ll always break the law. That is, until the good news of Jesus wakes us up to the fact that our sin, and our salvation are never about us, but about Him. We have sinned against God, and we need to be saved from the wrath of God. And to make it even more obvious that God is about Himself, He comes down to this earth and dies so you can have a right relationship with God.
Yet you are still guilty in God’s eyes without faith in Christ. But Jesus came, and lived the life you could never live; to earn you the righteousness before God you could never have, so that Jesus was treated as the sinner on the cross, while you live guilt-free because you live as though Christ does. This changes everything. There is a new way to be “righteous” before God, and that is through faith in Christ!
So today, stop trying so hard to be the perfect idea of a Christian, and being stuck in the cycle of trying to do enough good works to feel good about you. Realize what Christ did on the cross was enough, and only because of Jesus is your relationship with God right. If you live with this assurance, what’s stopping you from sharing it with the world? You obey God, because Christ obeyed to save you from Hell.
